Delicious Hot Cross Buns Recipe

Are you craving a warm and sweet treat? Look no further than these homemade hot cross buns. With their soft, fluffy texture and delightful combination of spices and dried fruit, they are the perfect addition to any breakfast or afternoon tea. Follow these simple steps to create your own batch of hot cross buns.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup dried currants or raisins
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (for the cross)
  • 2 tablespoons water (for the cross)
  • 2 tablespoons apricot jam (for glaze)

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, yeast, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
  2. Add the warm milk and melted butter to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and knead in the dried currants or raisins.
  6. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and shape them into buns. Place the buns on a greased baking sheet, cover with a kitchen towel, and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  7. In the meantime, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. In a small bowl, mix the remaining 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour with the water to make a thick paste for the cross. Transfer the paste into a piping bag or a plastic bag with the corner snipped off.
  9. Pipe a cross shape on top of each bun using the flour paste.
  10. Bake the buns in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
  11. While the buns are still warm, heat the apricot jam in a small saucepan until it becomes liquid. Brush the warm jam over the buns to give them a shiny glaze.
  12. Allow the buns to cool before serving.

Now, sit back, relax, and enjoy these delicious homemade hot cross buns. They are best served warm with a pat of butter. Share them with your loved ones or keep them all to yourself – we won’t judge!
