  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup dried currants or raisins
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (for the cross)
  • 2 tablespoons water (for the cross)
  • 2 tablespoons apricot jam (for glaze)


  1. In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, yeast, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
  2. Add the warm milk and melted butter to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and knead in the dried currants or raisins.
